As the music addict that I am, I do love Italian music.
In fact, one song from an Italian duo was missing in my Song contest list last week. And well, when I am in a music-mood, then I want more. So, without any further ado, a list of my favorite Italian songs. 1. AMEDEO MINGHI – CANTARE D’AMORE
I seriously have no clue where I pulled this one from, but I love it. From the first melody to the last word. I can listen to this one 10 times in a row and not get sick of it. Don’t even start with Il volo. That first melody immediately hits the right spot. Goosebumps, tears, the whole she-bang. Unfortunately, I decided it would be fun to look up the lyrics. I have been listening to Il volo for two decades now, so I always mumble some “Italian” and I should have stuck to doing that! Why do I do these things. looking for the meaning of a song always ruins the whole thing. My sweet Italian friend was right by raising her eyebrow when I told her about my love for this song. Joe Mariarca 😉 Then over to a duet with Every time you go away – Paul Young. Is there anybody on this planet who doesn’t love this song? That’s what I thought. Where Un kilo has a fast paced beat, Diamante is rather slow. Both fantastic songs. The missing song from my Song contest-list. I associate Gente di Mare with Ultravox’s Vienna, because I got to know the songs simultaneously. Now I want you to hear Vienna as well, but since it’s not Italian, no can do. Better luck next time. I chose Time to say goodbye as one of the songs during my father’s cremation. The fact that I am able to write this now without crying, feels really good. This song always hits the emotional trigger, but now it will always be connected to papa. Same as my feeling with Gente di Mare/Vienna, I associate Con te partiro with Vangelis’ Conquest of Paradise. Don’t ask why. I just do. Yes, I know, this title is absolutely Italian, but I didn’t think of this song while arranging this list. Since Ti Sento is also one of my favorites, I’m happy that I found it. I love this kind of hysterical song in the middle of such classic ballads. OK, I will go crawl into a little corner for not knowing this great artist. When I heard it, I obviously immediately recognized it. I bet everybody knows this. Love these surprises! Ohh yes, Eros, sing it to me! No, I am not sensitive to his Italian looks, but that voice – that voice I do like. I almost threw his lyrics in the translator too, but no. I have learned my lesson with Zucchero. I am happily staying in my illusion that his songs are romantic. You say Laura Pausini, I say melancholy. On the same shelf as Eros, Andrea en Zucchero. And, in fact, Celine Dion, but she doesn’t have Italian roots. I am a little doubtful about this one, but since I listened to Perdono quite often back in the day, it deserves a spot in the list. This was a big hit in 2003 and I still remember that my friend’s sister changed the fatto è fatto in, you can probably guess, f#ck de f#ck. It didn’t make any sense, but this little memory makes the song worthy of his spot. I admit, this does feels a bit like swearing in a church. After Laura Pausini, Andrea Bocelli, Zucchero and Eros Ramazotti – Gigi D’agostino belongs here too. I danced my butt off on his beats when I was 19: La Passion, The Riddle, bring it on. Apparently he goes by another name now, but Mr L’amour Toujours will always be Gigi D’agostino to me. I challenge you to pronounce this title of this song! No, it doesn’t ring a bell in your music mind? I didn’t know it either until 2006. It took me some time to track this baby down, but I’m glad I have found it. I hear you think: where in god’s name do you find something like this? Well, because of a (half) Italian crush that I had back in the day in college. I probably wanted to impress him by mentioning Il volo. He gave me a list with some popular Italian songs that I might like. I listened to these songs religiously, because that’s amore.. I literally yelled “NO WAY” to my laptop, when I say my lovely Dolce Vita appear on the screen. Obviously, you can’t possible go more Italian than Dolce Vita, but I just hadn’t thought about this song. The same as 5, 10 and 11, it didn’t really occur to me in a list of classic Italian songs.
